Video Interview: Karl Urban talks RED, and reveals details on DREDD!

Karl Urban came through Dallas recently to promote RED, which opens this weekend.  I had spoken to Karl at the San Diego Comic-Con over the summer, though we were there to talk about PRIEST.  During that time we discussed a little of his starring role in the Judge Dredd reboot, titled DREDD.  When we talked in Dallas, I managed to get a bit more out of him on it.  But before we get to that, Urban’s role in RED is a pretty impressive one, as he has a spectacular fight scene with Bruce Willis, and (as we found out in the press conference) does most of his own stunts.  Wait until you see him hit the flat screen high on the wall… ouch!  Karl also mentions his familiarity with the comic books the movie is based on, and working with director Robert Schwentke.

Urban heaped praise on the great Ernest Borgnine, who he shares a scene with in RED.  In this interview you’ll hear a lot, so give it a watch.  If you want the DREDD info, look below the vids, or just watch part 2 – I did my best to outline the news specific to that film below the vids.  In the audio you’ll hear the voice of me (Mark Walters), and Dallas journalists Alice Reese and Matt Mungle.  My sincere thanks to Rachel Parker of DFWLive.org for the camerawork, and Matt Mungle of MungleShow.com for the audio.

Notes on DREDD:

Karl revealed the story is “The story is a day in the life of Dredd as he puts his rookie Anderson through her paces to determine whether or not she’s got what it takes to become a judge.”

“It’s going to hardcore, high octane action.”  He mentioned that they are shooting the film in Cape Town, South Africa, Pete Travis (VANTAGE POINT) is directing.  Olivia Thirlby (JUNO) is playing Judge Anderson.  I tried to find out who the villain is, but Karl said he didn’t know.
