When she runs for the Catholic Woman of the Year title at her local parish – an award she has coveted for years – her final test is introducing her family to the board for the seal of approval. Now she must finally face the nonconformist family she has been glossing over for years. Her gay daughter, Shannon (Emily Deschanel), a successful lawyer, is about to marry her life partner Angela (Angelique Cabral). Her unhappily married son Frank Jr. (Jason Ritter) is cheating on his wife with the local manicurist. And Eileen’s own marriage to a recovered alcoholic is pulling at the seams.

At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors’ support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family’s political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about. As Election Day closes in, the two are locked in a dead heat, with insults quickly escalating to injury until all they care about is burying each other, in this mud-slinging, back-stabbing, home-wrecking comedy from “Meet the Parents” director Jay Roach that takes today’s political circus to its logical next level. Because even when you think campaign ethics have hit rock bottom, there’s room to dig a whole lot deeper.

Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Yin Yang (Jet Li), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), Toll Road (Randy Couture) and Hale Caesar (Terry Crews) — with newest members Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth) and Maggie (Yu Nan) aboard — are reunited when Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) enlists the Expendables to take on a seemingly simple job. The task looks like an easy paycheck for Barney and his band of old-school mercenaries. But when things go wrong and one of their own is viciously killed, the Expendables are compelled to seek revenge in hostile territory where the odds are stacked against them. Hell-bent on payback, the crew cuts a swath of destruction through opposing forces, wreaking havoc and shutting down an unexpected threat in the nick of time – six pounds of weapons-grade plutonium; enough to change the balance of power in the world. But that’s nothing compared to the justice they serve against the villainous adversary who savagely murdered their brother.

That is done the Expendables way….

This is definitely a great summer to be a comic-book fan. First, we got Marvel’s THE AVENGERS back on May 4th and as of this past Sunday it has already crossed the billion dollar mark world-wide making it the fastest movie EVER to reach that milestone including THE DARK KNIGHT, TITANIC and even AVATAR. Later this summer we will get the epic conclusion to Chris Nolan’s Batman Trilogy with THE DARK KNIGHT RISES as well as the reboot of Judge Dredd in the Karl Urban starring DREDD but before we get to those two, we have the reboot of the Spider-Man franchise by the appropriately named Marc Webb in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. Last night, Sony Pictures released, via NBC, a brand new 4-minute preview of the sure-to-be summer blockbuster and it’s just, well, amazing (pun not intended but it worked out well). You can check out the preview below.

I have to say that the interaction between and Spidey and the little boy in the car is stunning, but I do have one worry for the movie in that I think they may have changed Spider-Man’s origin and taken more of the Ang Lee HULK route in that it appears that part of Peter Parker’s abilities will be a mix of genetic engineering by his father and the bite by the radioactive spider. I may be wrong, but that is the feel that I have been getting from some of these trailers. If that turns out to be true, what are your thoughts on this change?

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is directed by Marc Webb and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen and Sally Field.

SYNOPSIS: One of the world’s most popular characters is back on the big screen as a new chapter in the Spider-Man legacy is revealed in “The Amazing Spider-Man.” Focusing on an untold story that tells a different side of the Peter Parker story, the new film stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, with Martin Sheen and Sally Field. The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay written by James Vanderbilt, based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Laura Ziskin, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach are producing the film in association with Marvel Entertainment for Columbia Pictures, which will open in theaters everywhere in 3D on July 3, 2012.

“The Amazing Spider-Man” is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is set to hit 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D theaters on July 3, 2012.

MPAA Rating PG-13

The original Dark Shadows was a TV soap opera from the 1960’s. The story concerned a vampire, Barnabas Collins, and a family in Maine. Along the way, there were also ghosts, werewolves and other beasts of the night. It was creepy and very different from any other program on television at the time. I remember finding it VERY slow and quickly became bored with the entire exercise. I was much more interested in Batman.

The show went off the air in April of 1971 but remained a cult favorite in re-runs. It also had two different spin-off movies and a total remake on television in 1991 and in 2004. The latest person to take on the idea of Dark Shadows is horror director Tim Burton, the mad genius behind such favorites as Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Batman and Edward Scissorhands.

This tale begins in Liverpool at the founding of the country, 1752. Young Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) and his family travel to America to start a new life. The town they found (Collinsport, Maine) becomes a thriving fishing community and the family becomes wealthy beyond belief. Barnabas has an affair with Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green) but finds he is in love with another, Josette. Heaven hath no fury as a witch scorned, and Angelique is in fact a witch. She places on Barnabas the curse of being a vampire and convinces the village to capture and bury him alive.

Flash forward to 1972 and the Collins family has fallen into bad times. Elizabeth Collins (Michelle Pfeiffer) struggles to keep the house and family afloat. Her staff has dwindled along with her fortunes. She has the care of two children as well as the 100 room mansion.

One night, a digging crew hits a large coffin buried deep in the ground. Opening it, we see the fully formed and hungry Barnabas. After taking his much-needed feast, he finds that the world is much different than when he was buried 200 years ago. He doesn’t understand things like McDonald’s, cars, television and phones. He is a stranger in a strange land. But, he does recognize Collinwood Manor and goes back to his roots.

Once at the home, Barnabas convinces the family to accept him as a distant relative. Elizabeth instantly sees the monetary gain of housing the creature of the night. Barnabas wants to establish the rightful name of Collins. Then he discovers the bump in that road.

Angelique is still alive and will do everything in her magical powers to keep the family from coming back. It becomes a battle between these two titans of the netherworld. While this is going on Dr, Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter) is trying to ‘cure’ Barnabas of his blood lusting affliction. Also added to the mix is the new nanny who bares an uncanny resemblance to Josette.

Johnny Depp is brilliant with the role, giving a performance that is at times sinister and at other times extremely comedic. He once again shows that he is one of the greatest actors working in Hollywood. While he delivers a stellar performance, the problem with Dark Shadows is in the words and deeds of the characters.

The writers have not figured out what kind of a movie they wanted to make. Is this a fish out of water story, a comment on the silliness that post-hippy world, or a straight out horror film? The movie never makes up its mind what it wants to accomplish.

The hodge-podge screenplay needed a focus, something that Tim Burton has trouble grasping. He has made many flicks that have great elements but not a collective whole. Mars Attacks! and Planet of the Apes are two prime examples of works that do not work.

Eva Green is best known as Vesper Lind in Casino Royale, the first Daniel Craig outing as 007. As a Bond girl, she isn’t given that much to do except look great. Here, she steals just about every scene she is in. She goes tooth to fang with Johnny Depp and delivers the best performance of the piece. Her Angelique is a wonderfully crazed witch who will stop at nothing to stop the man she loves. The film works best when she and Barnabas go after each other.

Both Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter are given little to do and their inclusion into Dark Shadows feels like stunt casting. To even a higher degree is the waste of talent of Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Lee, both previous vampires in Hammer Films. Only Jackie Earle Haley delivers a small part with the kind of comedic punch the material deserves.

Dark Shadows will probably drive in the horror fans and those who wax nostalgic for a show they remember being better than it was. I found the film mostly mediocre and a tremendous waste of a talented cast and crew. The movie looked great, with amazing sets and costumes; it just didn’t have anything at all to say.

DARK SHADOWS is set to hit theaters on May 11, 2012.

Occasionally I post info about comic book industry artists and writers, usually tied in with movie news or some big company event. As many of you who read the site may already be aware of, I manage the Dallas Comic Con and Sci-Fi Expo events in Dallas, and from time to time we get some pretty amazing people on the guest roster. In about a week or so, we’ll be having our 10th Anniversary show, and the guest list for this one is pretty spectacular. It occurs to me that making a post about some of the more notable names doesn’t have to be looked at as a vain or self-serving thing… it’s informative, and that’s what we’re about here. And with that, I turn today’s focus on Neal Adams.

This May 19-20 sees the return of the Dallas Comic Con celebrating its 10th Anniversary, officially titled ‘Stan Lee presents Dallas Comic Con.’ Among the incredible guests attending is a very special creator – the one and only Neal Adams. When it comes to comic book artists, there are well-known names, and then there’s “legendary” status. Adams continually redefines the genre with innovative ideas and dramatic character interpretations. His takes on popular heroes like Batman, Green Lantern, Green Arrow and Superman have wowed readers and heavily influences multiple generations of illustrators. Some of earliest days found him turning in comic strips for BEN CASEY, based on the popular ABC series. But it would be his work at DC Comics that defined his fan base, beginning in the Silver Age with covers for titles like ACTION COMICS and SUPERMAN’S GIRLFRIEND LOIS LANE. His work on Deadman in STRANGE ADVENTURES became award-winning, and with good reason. Neal moved into Marvel work with X-MEN and THE AVENGERS. But some of his most treasured stories were found in BATMAN and DETECTIVE COMICS, as well as GREEN LANTERN/GREEN ARROW in the Bronze Age. Adams also became a strong advocate for creator rights, even helping SUPERMAN creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster receive long-overdue credit, and getting original pages returned to artist Jack Kirby. Neal even formed his own comic book imprint with Continuity Comics, and continues to inspire and influence artists and readers to this day.

It’s hard to believe an industry legend like Neal Adams has never appeared in a popular city like Dallas before, but thankfully this May 19-20 that will change. We’re incredibly honored to have Mr. Adams join us as a special guest for the 10-year Anniversary of the Dallas Comic Con… like many others would claim, he’s one of my heroes.

Neal is appearing both days of the show, which also features guests like Stan Lee, Patrick Stewart, George Perez, Laura Vandervoort, Len Wein, James Marsters, Arthur Suydam, John de Lancie, Doug Sneyd, and Adam West and Burt Ward… to name but a few. Also check out his Vanguard Publishing book ‘The Art of Neal Adams’ which will be available at the show. VIP and 2-day priority passes are sold out, but General Admission tickets will be available at the show. You can find more information on the Dallas Comic Con HERE or follow the show Twitter HERE.

If you’re not familiar with the name Tony DeZuniga, you’re not familiar with one of the most talented and generous personalities in the comic book industry. I had the good fortune of knowing Tony and his wonderful wife Tina after inviting them to the Dallas Comic Con in January 2008, at which Tony was our Guest of Honor. After that show, during which almost our whole staff and comic fan community quickly fell in love with the couple, I would frequently see them out and about at other conventions. I always admired Tony’s dedication to the con circuit, and eagerness to interact with fans. Then there was his art, his incredibly detailed and breathtaking art. Tony could sit there at a show and knock out stunning convention commissions one after the other – these could not be called quick con sketches, they were works of art.

Tony was instrumental in kicking off the Filipino comic artist movement back in the 1970′s, which also introduced the industry to names like Alex Nino and Ernie Chan. Those days weren’t his first exposure to comics, as he had done work in the Philippines dating back to the 50′s. While making a name for himself with American audiences, he co-created characters like Jonah Hex and Black Orchid for DC. Tony also did work for Marvel on titles like CONAN THE BARBARIAN and THOR. I’m proud to own a few originals by the man, and they are some of my most-treasured pieces of original art.

In April of 2012, Tony suffered a stroke while visiting The Philippines. While he fought through it, there were several side effects, and hospital bills became nearly impossible to manage. Many prominent creators in the industry, including Neal Adams, Steve Niles, and Neil Gaiman did their best to encourage donations from other industry professionals and fans alike. Tony passed away at 1:25am on May 11, 2012 due to heart failure. It was a devastating blow to friends and fans who were hoping he’d pull through after his tough ordeal. Comic Book Artist Gerry Alanguilan had the following to say regarding DeZuniga’s impact on the current generation of Filipino comic book creators:

Tony DeZuniga mattered a lot to us because he became one of us. He joined us at our conventions, he hung out with us, interacted with us, and by doing so, he showed that he embraced us and accepted our contributions to the comics industry. He was our friend…. On a personal level, I found Mang Tony’s presence at conventions gave me a sense of security. He was a rock. An anchor. A steady presence I knew I could count on. He was there every time without fail. I knew that if I went to a comics convention, he would be there. And that was comforting to me.

Please read Gerry’s full post about Tony on his site HERE. It breaks my heart to write this, as I had genuinely hoped to have Tony back in Big D once more, and was thinking he’d get past all of this and be smiling and sketching at San Diego Comic-Con. I know he’s now in a better place, and my thoughts and prayers go out to Tina and his family. Many sites have reported Tony’s age to be 71, but he was in fact 79… a rather youthful 79 if I may say so. If you’d liked to post condolences, you may do so at Tony’s official Facebook page HERE.

Synopsis: In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet, or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets.

But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, a CIA “exfiltration” specialist named Tony Mendez (Affleck) comes up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.
