We recently reported that IRON MAN 2 writer Justin Theroux was set to write (with Ben Stiller) and direct a sequel to ZOOLANDER, the cult classic comedy from 2001.  Still has since confirmed that news, and spoke with Adam Rosenberg at MTV, about it during an interview for his new film GREENBERG, even dropping some story elements, and explaining how it would touch upon the decade of time that has passed since the first film.  He also mentioned “Other people have worked on the script,” and “There have been earlier scripts that (ZOOLANDER screenwriter John) Hamburg’s had input on, and Nick Stoller and people… we’re just going to take the best of what we have.”  Then he allowed “We have a new story idea that we feel excited about and we’re going to try and go forward.”

Stiller followed with some plot details about what fans can expect from the sequel.  “The beginning of the movie is (set)… 10 years later, and Derek and Hansel are literally forgotten. Nobody even knows who they are, so they have to re-invent themselves.”  The story will also deal with changes in the fashion world in the last decade, and how quickly trends can change.  They discussed more details, but eventually came to a question on everyone’s minds, as to whether or not Will Ferrell might return as the nefarious Mugatu.  Stiller stated “If Will says yes, he definitely has to be a part of it,” adding “To me, Mugatu is one of the classic screen villains of all time.”

I’ve always found ZOOLANDER to be a fun guilty pleasure comedy.  Yes, it’s stupid, I know, but it’s definitely a fun movie to watch if you’re in the right mood.  I’d love to see Stiller and Owen Wilson revisit those characters, and let’s face it, Will Ferrell needs a boost at the moment, since his last several movies have failed to impress much.  Do you think ZOOLANDER 2 could be great?  Are you on board with the idea?  Tell us in the comment section below.
