It’s hard to believe that ZOOLANDER came out 10 years ago.  10 years!  Though initially the film was considered a mediocre performer since it was released in 2001 mere weeks after 9/11 took place.  However, the film has had a healthy life on DVD and iTunes, and is regarded by many (myself included) to be a guilty pleasure cult classic.  Ben Stiller has long talked about doing a sequel to it, though it never seemed to have much movement… until now.  Looks like Paramount Pictures and Stiller are putting together a part 2 utilizing TROPIC THUNDER and IRON MAN 2 screenwriter Justin Theroux, as reported by Nikki Finke.  Theroux will also be directing the picture, which is said to be PG-13, and is heading to Fashion Week in Paris to do extensive research.  So far no deal has been made with Owen Wilson to return, though the studio is hopeful.  Now here’s the odd part, apparently none other than Jonah Hill (SUPERBAD) is in negotiations to play the bad guy!  Never saw that coming.  I actually think Will Ferrell’s nemesis role in the first outing was one of his more effective comedic performances.  Can Hill top it, or even come close?  I guess we’ll see.

Finke also noted that Paramount wants to keep the budget below $50 million, so they’re talking upfront reductions in exchange for bigger upsides.  Stiller will be working directly with Theroux on the project, and everyone seems very enthusiastic about it.  I for one wouldn’t mind seeing Derek Zoolander return to the big screen.  I have a feeling I was one of the few that saw the original during its opening week.  How do you feel about a part 2?  Think that Hansel is still hot right now?  Tell us below.  In the meantime, remember this classic brainwash scene?
