Trailer and poster for BLACKTHORN – Sam Shepard looks phenomenal as an older Butch Cassidy

How great is Sam Shepard, seriously?  The guy has always impressed me, starting in my childhood watching him play Chuck Yeager in THE RIGHT STUFF (a role that earned him an Academy Award nomination).  He’s one of those actors who can star in a heavy drama, then turn around and play a part in a silly action flick (see STEALTH), and yet you gotta love the guy.  His newest film is BLACKTHORN from Magnolia Pictures is definitely on our radar, in which he plays an older Butch Cassidy caught up in yet another adventure.  Directed by Spanish sensation Mateo Gil, he co-stars with Eduardo Noriega, Stephen Rea, Daniel Aguirre and Luis Bredow. Check out the (can we say AWESOME) poster above and trailer below and tell us your thoughts in the comments.

It’s been said (but unsubstantiated) that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were killed in a standoff with the Bolivian military in 1908. In BLACKTHORN, Cassidy (Shepard) survived, and is quietly living out his years under the name James Blackthorn in a secluded Bolivian village. Tired of his long exile from the US and hoping to see his family again before he dies, Cassidy sets out on the long journey home. But when an unexpected encounter with an ambitious young criminal (Eduardo Noriega) derails his plans, he is thrust into one last adventure, the likes of which he hasn’t experienced since his glory days with the Sundance Kid.
