Harold Ramis promises GHOSTBUSTERS 3 is coming… really.

Director Ivan Reitman on the set with Ernie Hudson, Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, and Bill Murray

Ghostbusters fans have been hoping for a third installment for quite a while now, and both Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis have made various statements in recent years leading us to believe it’s indeed on the way.  However, many of those statements never seemed to show more than possible forward-thinking on the matter.  Well in the past few weeks, while being interviewed for AVATAR, Sigourney Weaver dropped some news about GHOSTBUSTERS 3 being actively discussed, and even dropped a few possible plot points from the proposed script.  Now Harold Ramis is throwing down some pretty decisive talk about it as well, leading us to believe we may actually see this thing before we’re all ghosts ourselves.  In a recent interview with Heeb Magazine, which is a lot fun to read by the way, Ramis said the following when asked about GHOSTBUSTERS 3:

Something’s going to happen. Dan [Aykroyd] did write a spec GB3 screenplay a few years ago, but no one was motivated to pursue it. Now, 25 years after the original, there seems to be some willingness to proceed and apparently a substantial public appetite for a sequel. We’ll introduce some new young Ghostbusters, and all the old guys will be in it, too. Think Christopher Lloyd in Back to the FutureGB3 is progressing with plans to shoot next summer and release in 2011

So there you go, definitely a step in the right direction.  In these days of revisitng franchises, and sequels and remakes being the hot thing to do, GHOSTBUSTERS 3 is perhaps more likely than ever.  Sylvester Stallone successfully went back to his ROCKY and RAMBO roots, and Harrison Ford (for better or worse) saw big money returning to the role of INDIANA JONES… and let’s be honest – Bill Murray could use a hit.  I think this could be great, if done right.  I also wonder if they could pull Rick Moranis out of retirement.  To this day the original GHOSTBUSTERS is one of my favorite movies of all time, and perhaps the one movie I saw more than any other in the theater.  I’d love to see those characters revisited one last time.
