If you’re not up to date on the next installment of the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE franchise, the most important new addition to the series is that of director Brad Bird, who up until now had proven himself solely as a strong animated film director. Word has it he’s doing incredible things with the new M:I film, titled GHOST PROTOCOL, and I’m especially excited to see the man bring his sensibilities to a franchise like this. Jeremy Renner has also joined the cast, and this next outing is supposed to be a hand-off allowing him to take over for star Tom Cruise. The trailer has officially hit, and you can see it below. Looks pretty intense, and what a cast. Tom Cruise returns (of course), and is joined by Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Josh Holloway, Michael Nyqvist, Vladimir Mashkov, Lea Seydoux, and Anil Kapoor. Tell us your thoughts in the comments.

Director Brad Bird and Producer J.J. Abrams bring us the action packed, entertainment event of the holiday season with MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL. This is not just another mission. The IMF is shut down when it’s implicated in a global terrorist bombing plot. Ghost Protocol is initiated and Ethan Hunt and his rogue new team must go undercover to clear their organization’s name. No help, no contact, off the grid. You have never seen a mission grittier and more intense than this.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL opens December 16, 2011
