One of the last-minute surprises at this year’s Dallas International Film Festival was the addition of two very special award presenters – Larry Hagman (of DALLAS fame) and the one and only Peter Fonda. I’ve had the pleasure of talking to Peter before, back when he had consigned his personal collection of memorabilia to Heritage Auctions in 2007 – you can see that interview here. The great thing about Peter Fonda is also one of the most frustrating things as an interviewer – his answers are always long and filled with tons of information. It’s great to listen to the man talk, but in an interview you’re usually watching the clock, as typically you’ve got a publicist or press agent counting down the seconds until they need to pull the talent away. Thankfully, I’ve managed to get what I call “interview gold” from Peter twice now, thanks to our second sit down meeting at this year’s festival. I asked him to recap his award show story with Jacqueline Bisset (for some reason I thought it was Raquel Welch at first), as in our previous interview we started rolling in the middle of the tale. So some of this new interview is a little redundant, but to listen to Peter Fonda talk is mesmerizing… the kind of experience you’d liken to a lovable family uncle who you never see enough, regailing you with stories of the good old days. We discussed some of his memories of the late great Dennis Hopper on EASY RIDER, talked a little about Salvador Dali, and even got into watches and boots. It’s a fun interview, but I figure it will take many more hours of Peter and I sitting down with one another before I find out everything I really want to know. But hey, I’m more than willing to take time out for that. Check out the interview below, shot by our buddy David Hamilton. Big thanks to the fine folks at the Dallas International Film Festival for their help and patience (we went over by a few minutes), and of course thanks to Peter for always being so damn entertaining.
