The name of director Roland Emmerich typically accompanies action or sci-fi themed films, like INDEPENDENCE DAY, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, or most recently 2012. What you probably don’t think about is William Shakespeare. Emmerich’s new film ANONYMOUS explores the conspiracy theory that Shakespeare may not have actually written all those famous plays, and the untold history of where the historic works really came from… it’s like the JFK of the literary world. The cast includes Rhys Ifans, Joely Richardson, Vanessa Redgrave, Derek Jacobi, David Thewlis, Xavier Samuel, Jamie Campbell and Rafe Spall. The trailer below does look intriguing, but I’m sure we can expect some hardcore fans of the famous Bard to raise a fist in protest. Check it out and tell us your thoughts in the comments.

Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds ranging from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens to Henry James and Sigmund Freud, namely: who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue, illicit romances in the Royal Court, and the schemes of greedy nobles hungry for the power of the throne were exposed in the most unlikely of places: the London stage.

ANONYMOUS opens September 30, 2011
