Oscar-nominated actress Amy Adams (THE FIGHTER) has been cast as Clark Kent’s love interest Lois Lane in director Zack Snyder’s SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL.  The LA Times broke the story, stating Snyder called the 36-year-old Adams from Paris which doing press for his current film SUCKER PUNCH.  Apparently the director claimed he found her to be the clear choice for Lois after meeting with the actress.  She joins current cast members Henry Cavill (as Superman), Kevin Costner (as Jonathan Kent) and Diane Lane (as Martha Kent).

“There was a big, giant search for Lois,” Snyder said. “For us it was a big thing and obviously a really important role. We did a lot of auditioning but we had this meeting with Amy Adams and after that I just felt she was perfect for it.”

Snyder declined to discuss the precise prominence of Lois in the story or any plot details about the film but he said the role is “a linchpin” to the project and that he considers it essential that Lois — an FDR-era creation – arrives on screen in 2012 with contemporary appeal and spirit.

“It goes back to what I’ve said about Superman and making him really understandable for today. What’s important to us is making him relevant and real and making him empathetic to today’s audience so that we understand the decisions he makes. That applies to Lois as well. She has to be in the same universe as him [in tone and substance].”

I’m actually okay with this choice, though it is a little surprising Snyder went with someone Amy’s age, as ageism seems to be somewhat of an issue in Hollywood.  Yet seeing how flawlessly Adams transformed herself into a Massachusetts barmaid in THE FIGHTER, and judging from some of her past performances, she’s perfectly capable of bringing something special to this as well.  The real question at this point will be what story direction the new Superman film will take.  The character was introduced in 1938 through ACTION COMICS #1, and through the years has been portrayed as a plucky, go-getter reporter, an archetype that has been used in many stories and movies up until today.  How do you feel about Adams getting cast as Lane?  Tell us in the comments below.
