Marc Webb’s reboot of the popular Marvel Comics superhero has officially got a title today. The film will be called THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, which makes sense, as it was either that or SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN, right? Andrew Garfield, who was noticeably snubbed in the Academy Award nominations (he’s terrific in THE SOCIAL NETWORK), takes on the role of Peter Parker previously made famous by Tobey Maguire in the Sam Raimi interpretations. Emma Stone plays his girlfriend Gwen Stacy. Outside of Garfield and Stone, Chris Zylka is Eugene “Flash” Thompson, Rhys Ifans (GREENBERG) is The Lizard (allegedly), Irrfan Khan (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE) plays Nels Van Adder (expected to become Proto-Goblin), Annie Parisse (NATIONAL TREASURE) is Mrs. Van Atter, Martin Sheen is Uncle Ben, Sally Field is Aunt May (allegedly), Denis Leary is Gwen’s dad, and finally Campbell Scott and Julianne Nicholson appear as Parker’s parents Richard and Mary Parker, who make an orphan out of Peter. No one’s saying anything about the tone of the series. Will it be like the Raimi movies, or Nolan’s Dark Knight, or something else?
I’m betting it’s very close in tone to the Raimi films, but not as Raimi-ish in style. Sony knows what works, so they’re probably going to do their best to match what came before it. I doubt we’ll ever see a dark, Christopher Nolan-esque Spidey movie.
Another Spiderman? Another 3D movie? Boring… Give me something I haven’t seen – dont we have enough retread reboots out there?
