First look at Meryl Streep as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in THE IRON LADY

I can honestly say that when I think of Margaret Thatcher, Meryl Streep doesn’t come to mind. That’s gonna change though, as a rather uncanny new photo has emerged (courtesy of Deadline) from the Pathé UK production of THE IRON LADY, currently in its second week of shooting in London. Streep plays the famous British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher for director Phyllida Lloyd, who also worked with the popular actress in MAMMA MIA!

Jim Broadbent co-stars as Margaret’s husband Dennis. The film is said to be showing its first footage at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Streep was quoted to say “I am trying to approach the role with as much zeal, fervour and attention to detail as the real Lady Thatcher possesses – I can only hope my stamina will begin to approach her own.”

Check out the photo, which you can click on to make REALLY big, and tell us your thoughts in the comments.  While Meryl Streep movies aren’t exactly of great interest to me, I can’t deny she’s an exceptional actress, and the idea of her in this role is rather intriguing.  This may make a nice companion piece to Helen Mirren’s THE QUEEN.
