Drew Struzan, while widely known among the art community, is still to this day a somewhat unsung hero of the Hollywood world.  You’ve without a doubt seen his theatrical posters, which started turning moviegoer heads back in the 1970’s, and particularly in the 1980’s.  He’s tackled multiple works of art for the POLICE ACADEMY franchise, the BACK TO THE FUTURE trilogy, the INDIANA JONES films, and of course the STAR WARS sagas.  But those are just the more popular names, as his work can be seen in memorable wall art for movies like John Carpenter’s THE THING and BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, plus several of THE MUPPETS films, THE GOONIES, HOOK, and too many more to name here.  The documentary DREW: THE MAN BEHIND THE POSTER pulls back the curtain a bit on the reclusive artist, and features interviews with major Hollywood talents along the way, including Harrison Ford, Michael J. Fox, Steven Spielberg, and even George Lucas.  Struzan has struggled through the years with studio heads trying to art direct his work, which is frustrating and sad considering what an amazingly impressive gift he possesses.  In the new video clip below, Struzan and his wife Dylan talk about how INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM marked a special moment in his career, allowing the artist to (for the first time) do exactly what he wanted to.

And if you haven’t seen it, here’s the teaser trailer for the documentary, which again shows just how many big Hollywood players have immense respect for Drew. I for one cannot wait to see this thing in full.
