Director James Wan and writer/actor Leigh Whannell, the two men responsible for the original SAW movie (still the best in my opinion), reteamed to work on the upcoming horror film INSIDIOUS. Up until now, there was no release date given for the film, but that changed today, and (we’re not fooling) the movie is set to open April 1, 2011.
I had the pleasure of meeting both of these gentlemen shortly after SAW was released, and they’re nice fellas, so I wish them all the best with this new collaborative effort. Since the first SAW, Wan has also helmed movies like DEAD SILENCE and DEATH SENTENCE, with Whannell writing the former and co-starring in the latter. INSIDIOUS (if I’m not mistaken) is the first time Leigh and James are working together since the original SAW in the same capacity, with Leigh writing and starring. Sharing the screen are Patrick Wilson (BARRY MUNDAY), Rose Byrne (GET HIM TO THE GREEK), and Barbara Hershey (BLACK SWAN). Word has it INSIDIOUS was a hit at the Toronto International Film Festival inn September, and has now been picked up by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group and will be released by FilmDistrict.
The movie will open against director Duncan Jones’ SOURCE CODE, Darren Lynn Bousman MOTHER’S DAY, James Gunn’s SUPER (in limited release), and the Russell Brand animated film HOP. I’m hoping it fares well, and you can almost always count on horror fans to support these kinds of movies. The story is said to be about “a young family which makes the terrifying discovery that the body of their comatose boy has become a magnet for malevolent entities, while his consciousness lies trapped in the dark and insidious realm known as The Further.”
FearNet posted the following clip (via Yahoo) back in September, though to date no trailer has been released for the film. When one hits, we’ll be sure to post it. Wan’s next film NIGHTFALL sounds interesting too. According to IMDB, the story follows “A survivalist sent to a Texas prison that’s secretly run by vampire buddies with a ruthless killer on an escape plan.”
