VIDEO FEATURETTE: Behind the Scenes: Natural Acting Experience – Johnny Depp in RANGO redefining animated filmmaking?

There’s an interesting video up at Yahoo showing the creative process behind the Gore Verbinski directed RANGO, featuring the voices of Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Bill Nighy, Abigail Breslin, Alfred Molina, Harry Dean Stanton, Ray Winstone, and Timothy Olyphant. This behind the scenes featurette is short but sweet, and shows a very interesting side of the filmmaking process behind this project. Verbinski shot the actors in full character, walking around and talking to one another, then used that footage as a template for the animators. Depp even refers to it as “Emotion Capture” as an alternative to motion capture. If ya ask me, this is a pretty revolutionary way to shoot animated movies, and hopefully one that will catch on. I love the fun and collaborative aspect of it. It’s also about the only way to get talking animated animals to emulate the actual actor’s movements and posture, to any sort of successful degree. Check out the video below and tell us your thoughts in the comments. Are you excited about RANGO?
