One of the many press conferences I participated in this year at San Diego Comic-Con was the Sony Pictures junket for director Jonathan Liebesman’s BATTLE: LOS ANGELES, starring Aaron Eckhart (THE DARK KNIGHT) and Michelle Rodriguez (MACHETE). It was oddly enough one of the least satisfying functions during the con, but only because the stars and director pretty much refused to reveal hardly anything about the film. Imagine going to a press conference during which none of your questions get answered… frustrating. However, we did manage to pry a few bits of info out regarding the film, such as the fact that the aliens are attacking Earth because of our resources, and primarily (oddly enough) for our water. Now that could be a misdirect, but that’s what was said. I have footage from the Q&A which will be posted soon. Of course the obvious question then becomes why not attack San Diego… which is surrounded by water. There’s not a lot of water in L.A. – Venice Beach maybe, but not L.A. proper. Not to mention BATTLE: SAN DIEGO would have been a much cooler film to promote at Comic-Con, right? The movie co-stars Bridget Moynahan and Michael Peña, and is written by Christopher Bertolini (THE GENERAL’S DAUGHTER). Liebesman’s previous film work includes THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING and DARKNESS FALLS. The trailer is below, and it’s pretty loaded with action. The use of music is particularly interesting and effective. I genuinely hope this film ends up being as dark and serious as it looks.

Here’s the official synopsis from Sony Pictures:
When unknown forces suddenly and mercilessly attack the City of Angels out of nowhere, it’s up to a local Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and a new platoon of unseasoned soldiers to meet the threat. As the invasion hits the streets of LA, these Marines become our first and last line of defense in an intense battle against an enemy unlike any they’ve ever encountered before.
BATTLE: LOS ANGELES opens March 11, 2011

And the question everyone is already asking, what is that song in the trailer??? We have the answer, you heard it here first. It’s by Johann Johannsson, and it’s called “Sun’s Gone Dim” – check out the video below.
Cool video in its own right, eh?
