While everyone is counting the seconds until HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS Part I opens, some may have overlooked Daniel Radcliffe’s other project, which has the potential to be very interesting. Matt Reeves’ LET ME IN did a nice job of reviving the Hammer name in horror movies, and THE WOMAN IN BLACK should help continue the Hammer legacy for a new generation. With HARRY POTTER hype at an all-time high, the company has released the first official photos of Radcliffe from their period horror film THE WOMAN IN BLACK. The movie is directed by James Watkins (EDEN LAKE, which is a highly effective horror thriller) and taken from an adapted screenplay by Jane Goldman (KICK-ASS, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS) based on the Susan Hill novel. Co-stars include Ciaran Hinds, Janet McTeer and Mary Stockley.
The story follows a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe), who is ordered to travel to a remote village and sort out a recently deceased client’s papers. As he works alone in the client’s isolated house, Kipps begins to uncover tragic secrets, his unease growing when he glimpses a mysterious woman dressed only in black. Receiving only silence from the locals, Kipps is forced to uncover the true identity of the Woman in Black on his own, leading to a desperate race against time when he discovers her true intent.
Are audiences ready for a non-HARRY POTTER Daniel Radcliffe? He’s proven himself on stage, but the big screen has yet to see him outside of the J. K. Rowling-created role. I definitely like the idea of having a name like his on board to help bring in some otherwise uncaring audience members. If Hammer wants to revitalize their brand, they need the right names to make it happen. If this film is promoted right with the POTTER hype behind it, who knows what levels of success it will see. There’s also the obvious connection of Jane Goldman, who has proven herself as a competent and bankable screenwriter. She may just be the Shane Black of this generation, and that’s fine by me.
