Rhys Ifans will play “The Lizard” in Marc Webb’s 3D SPIDER-MAN reboot

Just days ago we told you that Rhys Ifans was cast to be a major villain in director Marc Webb’s 3D SPIDER-MAN reboot.  Today we learn via TheWrap that the mysterious villain he’ll be playing is in fact Dr. Curt Connors, a.k.a. The Lizard.  It’s a role that Dylan Baker had been building up to doing in the Sam Raimi SPIDER-MAN films, but never got past just being the professor at Peter Parker’s college.  In the comics, Connors lost his arm, and in an attempt to grow it back he accidentally transformed himself into a reptillian creature, which Spidey would then have to fight.  Many were speculating that Ifans would be playing The Vulture, as at one point John Malkovich had been rumored to play that villian in the next Spidey outing.  There was also some question about Venom being in this new take, but TheWrap is also saying that sources close to the production are saying that’s not true now.  I like The Lizard in the comics, but I’m not sure that one character is enough to hold the antagonistic side of a superhero story.  What do you think?  Do you like the idea of Ifans playing Dr. Connors?  Tell us in the comments below.
