Lisa Joy is the mind behind HBO’s WESTWORLD, a smartly-executed update of the Michael Crichton film from 1973. Before that she wrote fan-favorite series like PUSHING DAISIES and BURN NOTICE. She’s now moving toward motion pictures with the futuristic thriller REMINISCENCE, which stars Hugh Jackman as a man who investigates memories… there’s shades of MINORITY REPORT here, and perhaps something like DREAMSCAPE, but it also has similarities to the Christopher Nolan movie INCEPTION and (perhaps) Wally Pfister’s TRANSCENDENCE. Essentially, it looks like a mixture of films we’ve already seen, but at the same time it does look interesting. It’s getting harder and harder for Hollywood to sell these “high concept” films on moviegoers, but perhaps Joy can find something cool here. I’ll say this, the visuals alone are intriguing to me. The idea of a futuristic Miami that’s semi-flooded feels like a realistic future, and the entire concept of people taking comfort in reliving their own nostalgia is quite reflective of real life as well. The cast includes two different MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE alumni, Rebecca Ferguson and Thandie Newton, the latter of which worked with Joy previously on WESTWORLD. Nick Bannister (Hugh Jackman), a private investigator of the mind, navigates the darkly alluring world of the past by helping his clients access lost memories. Living on the fringes of the sunken Miami coast, his life is forever changed when he takes on a new client, Mae (Rebecca Ferguson). A simple matter of lost and found becomes a dangerous obsession. As Bannister fights to find the truth about Mae’s disappearance, he uncovers a violent conspiracy, and must ultimately answer the question: how far would you go to hold on to the ones you love?
