I grew up watching Tom and Jerry cartoons, and they still hold a special place in my heart. That said, I’m not sure today’s kids would appreciate this comical cat and mouse duo the same way I did, but we’ll find out soon enough when the animation/live action hybrid TOM & JERRY movie hits theaters next year. This actually isn’t the first attempt at a movie for the duo, as there was an animated film in 1993 that met with mixed results (it boasted the use of songs written by Henry Mancini). This new take finds Tom and Jerry in a sort of meta storyline, coming out of the cartoon world and into the real one, interacting with human beings and Jerry taking up residence in a hotel. And who does the hotel recruit to rid their new-found mouse problem? Tom, of course. This new film has actually been in production in some form or another since 2009, always meeting with delays and problems, but it looks like the fine folks at Warner Bros. Animation finally figured it out. Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña, Rob Delaney, Colin Jost, and Ken Jeong make up the human cast of the film, and this comes from director Tim Story (RIDE ALONG). One of the most beloved rivalries in history is reignited when Jerry moves into New York City’s finest hotel on the eve of “the wedding of the century,” forcing the event’s desperate planner to hire Tom to get rid of him, in director Tim Story’s “Tom & Jerry.” The ensuing cat and mouse battle threatens to destroy her career, the wedding and possibly the hotel itself. But soon, an even bigger problem arises: a diabolically ambitious staffer conspiring against all three of them. An eye-popping blend of classic animation and live action, Tom and Jerry’s new big-screen adventure stakes new ground for the iconic characters and forces them to do the unthinkable… work together to save the day.
