Blumhouse was already having a successful year thanks to THE INVISIBLE MAN, but their next offering is going straight to VOD thanks to Covid-19 shutting down movie theaters. YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT almost feels like it could be a spiritual cousin to THE INVISIBLE MAN in some way, the story revolving around a couple that move into a new house, only to discover strange occurrences around them… which gets progressively worst the longer they stay… but it some of it all in their head, or a more frightening supernatural force? The film stars Kevin Bacon and Amanda Seyfried, and it’s written and directed by David Koepp (JURASSIC PARK, PANIC ROOM, ZATHURA). Two things to note about Koepp – his last directed film was the dreadful Johnny Depp bomb MORTDECAI (2015), but he’s also worked previously with Kevin Bacon on similar material writing the ghost story STIR OF ECHOES (1999). Normally I’d say a film like this going direct to VOD is not a good sign, but currently it’s just a sign of the times until the Coronavirus threat is over. Take a look at the trailer and tell us your thoughts in the comments.
Theo (Kevin Bacon) and Susanna (Amanda Seyfried) are a couple seeking a restful vacation on an isolated edge of the world in the Welsh countryside only to discover that secrets demand a reckoning and travel with them. Their marriage is shredding at the seams, frayed by her secretiveness, his jealousy, and the shadow of his past. At first their vacation with their six year old daughter seems like a perfect retreat, but distorts into a perfect nightmare when Theo’s grasp on reality begins to unravel and he suspects that a sinister force within the house knows more than he or Susanna have revealed, even to each other.
