Universal Pictures is releasing the World War I epic 1917 in select theaters on Christmas Day, a film that is already on several critics group lists as one of the best of the year. The Dallas/Fort Worth Film Critics (the organization I belong to) even voted it Best Picture of the Year. It’s a film that’s stayed with me since I saw it, beautifully shot by Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins, and done to give the appearance of being one continuous shot. It’s intimate and haunting, and recounts a time in our history that seems to be sadly fading from memory. Hollywood definitely shows love to World War II in cinema, but the first World War isn’t frequently featured on the big screen. Mendes approached this from a personal angle, using his own grandfather’s war stories as influence for the screenplay, which he co-wrote with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. I had a chance to chat one-on-one (or rather one-on-two) with lead actors George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman about their work in the film, which I’m betting you’ll be hearing a LOT about as award season ramps up. Check out those interviews below, and look for 1917 in select theaters on Christmas Day – expanding wider on January 10th, 2020.
