After wrapping up the first 10 years of fantastic Marvel Studios films with AVENGERS: ENDGAME, Kevin Feige is riding high on some major success at this point, and could pretty much do whatever he wants. He’s also a huge STAR WARS fan, and has talked openly about his love for the Lucasfilm movies. Now it looks like he may turn that fandom into the next big step in his career. THR is reporting that Kathleen Kennedy, the current President of Lucasfilm at Disney, has tapped Kevin to assist on future STAR WARS projects.
The report also states Feige would be working on a wave of projects set in the universe, so that implies movies and possibly television, or perhaps just multiple films. The meeting of the minds was said to take place in the late summer, with Walt Disney Studios co-chairman Alan Horn noting “We are excited about the projects Kathy and the Lucasfilm team are working on, not only in terms of Star Wars but also Indiana Jones and reaching into other parts of the company including Children of Blood and Bone with Emma Watts and Fox. With the close of the Skywalker Saga, Kathy is pursuing a new era in Star Wars storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together.”
It’s stated that Kevin Feige pitched a new STAR WARS film to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Disney head Bob Iger, and studio co-chairmen Alan Horn and Alan Bergman. The big question now is whether or not Feige will step up into a bigger role when Kennedy’s contract ends in a year or two. The report also states that “Feige has told a major actor that there’s a specific role he would like that person to play when and if he makes the movie,” though there’s no word on which actor he has in mind… we’d guess someone he’s worked with frequently, perhaps Robert Downey Jr. or Chris Evans, now that they’re no longer locked down to Marvel films. This will undoubtedly draw attention of some of the more vocal STAR WARS critics, who are quick to point out their hatred for THE LAST JEDI, the box office failure of SOLO, and the general malaise among a section of Lucasfilm fandom. Could Feige be the shot in the arm the franchise needs? Possibly, though he’s already got his hands pretty full with Marvel Studios. And if Feige was to take over Kennedy’s job when she steps down, who would take over Marvel Studios at that point? Should be VERY interesting to see how this plays out. Do you see Feige’s involvement as a good thing for Lucasfilm? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.
