I’m still not convinced making comic book movies about the villains is a great idea. To me the villain without the hero is about as interesting as the hero with no villains. Despite that, DC and Warner Bros. are releasing JOKER, which gives us a new and gritty take on The Clown Prince of Crime, played her by Joaquin Phoenix. I’ll admit, the teaser trailer below is interesting, but who is this movie for? One of the best Joker stories ever written was The Killing Joke, which deals with the character’s origin in a brilliant way, but that story very much had Batman in it too. We’ll see, maybe this will work on levels I’m not expecting. The supporting cast includes Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Marc Maron, and Shea Whigham. Joker centers around an origin of the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Todd Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.
