It seems Blumhouse is on a roll with their horror releases, and not showing any signs of slowing down. One of their best entries to date was 2017’s HAPPY DEATH DAY, a sort of GROUNDHOG DAY-like story in which a college girl named Tree wakes up after a drunken one night stand, and finds herself the victim of a school slasher in a baby mask… there’s just one problem, in that every time she dies she then wakes up and starts the day over. So she must break the cycle by beating the killer, and there’s a time factor as she gets weaker as the days restart. One of the things that made the movie so much fun was an incredibly endearing performance from the lead actress Jessica Rothe, who has all the makings of a major star if she keeps doing what she’s doing. Now she’s back for a sequel in HAPPY DEATH DAY 2U, which brings back many of the original cast from the first film, along with director Christopher Landon, who promised the second film would explore what is actually causing the time loop. You got a glimpse of the possible reason in the first trailer, which we posted a month ago, as it shows what looks like a science experiment gone wrong. That trailer started off making it look like the killer had shifted focus to Tree’s boyfriend’s roommate Ryan Phan (Phi Vu), though we soon saw it eventually goes back to her, throwing her into the rather unpleasant cycle once more. This is definitely a film you’ll not want to watch until you’ve seen the first one. The supporting cast includes Israel Broussard, Ruby Modine, Suraj Sharma, Rachel Matthews, Charles Aitken, Steve Zissis, Laura Clifton, and Sarah Yarkin. Oddly not back is comic book writer Scott Lobdell, who penned the first film and came up with the whole concept for it… not sure what that’s about, though I won’t assume anything, as for all I know he may have not wanted to return. Check out the new trailer below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.
