These days independent films need all the love they can get, so we’re happy to turn the spotlight on COLD NOVEMBER, which hits iTunes next Tuesday. Filmed in the northern Minnesota woods, it tells the story of 12-year-old Florence, on the cusp of womanhood, as she goes on her first deer hunt, a traditional rite-of-passage in her matriarchal family. Written and directed by Karl Jacob, it stars Bijou Abas, Anna Klemp, and Jacob plays a role here as well. This was one of just 10 projects selected by for the Independent Filmmaker Project Narrative Lab in New York in 2016, had a successful Kickstarter campaign and completed its festival run with a win at the Memphis Indie Film Festival as a Jury Winner. The St. Paul Star Tribune says it’s a “low-budget, come-out-of-nowhere” and “quietly rewarding” film. It takes the traditionally male custom of hunting and tells the story from the women’s perspective as a commentary on life, death and growing up. Challenging our usual way of looking at things, it’s the kind of film that makes the Indie community worth supporting. Take a look at a short trailer below, and if you’re interested be sure to look for it on iTunes and Vimeo On Demand next week. You can visit the Official Website RIGHT HERE.
Deep in the wilderness of rural middle America, 12-year-old Florence is eager to undergo the rite-of-passage of her first deer hunt. A tradition passed down through many generations of women in her family, the act of killing a deer symbolizes the transition into adulthood. As Florence is taught how to shoot a gun and skin a deer, she gains a deeper understanding of life and death. When Florence finds herself alone during a hunt, however, expectations dissolve into chaos as she must rely on her instinct and training to follow through with her decisions, pull herself together, and face becoming an adult.
