These days even horror movies are out of original ideas, so we’re just getting more and more remakes (or in some cases sequels). Joel Schumacher’s FLATLINERS was a semi-successful thriller in 1990, showcasing hot names at the time like Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon. The remake goes after some interesting names, including Ellen Page, Diego Luna (hot off ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY), and Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries), along with newer names like British actor James Norton (Happy Valley) and Kiersey Clemons (DOPE). At first I felt like this was just another unnecessary remake, but with Niels Arden Oplev (original THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO) serving as director, and Ben Ripley (SOURCE CODE) handling the screenplay, I may have some unexpected interest to see what they pull off. The original movie had a sort of anti-bullying theme going in it, whereas this one looks more like pure horror. We’ll see this September, in the meantime tell us your thoughts in the comments.
In Flatliners, five medical students, hoping to gain insight into the mystery of what lies beyond the confines of life, embark on a daring and dangerous experiment. By stopping their hearts for short periods of time, each triggers a near-death experience. As the investigation becomes more and more perilous, they are forced to confront the sins of their pasts, as well as contend with the paranormal consequences of trespassing to the other side.
