Tony Stark’s dad Howard Stark will be in THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA

Before you go screaming “SPOILER!”, just know that this information isn’t going to ruin your IRON MAN 2 moviegoing experience.  That said, in IRON MAN 2, John Slattery (best known for MAD MEN) portrays Tony Stark’s neglectful genius father Howard Stark in some old footage Tony watches.  It’s a small role, but an important one in the grand scheme of the technology behind IRON MAN.  Well in a recent interview with MTV (and my buddy Rick Marshall!) for IRON MAN 2, director Jon Favreau revealed that Howard Stark may also be appearing in Joe Johnston’s THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA, which certainly makes sense, and in a nice little way helps tie all of these stories together a bit.  You can see the clip below, but here’s the quote when Favreau was asked about whether or not Howard would show up in the CAP film:

“Yeah, because he was around then,” confirmed Favreau.

“[‘Captain America’] is World War II,” he explained. “It wouldn’t be that same actor, probably, because he would be much younger.”

Elaborating on the elder Stark’s role, Favreau said the industrialist willplay a role not unlike another famous businessman from the real world.

“[Howard Stark] was starting out during that time, and [he] was involved with the war effort, much like Howard Hughes,” said the filmmaker.

Now we’ve already seen Cap’s shield in the background during the first IRON MAN movie, and let’s just say IRON MAN 2 eludes to it as well.  So the question is, what role will Howard Stark play in the life of Steve Rogers?  Many are already speculating (justifiably) that Howard may be the man who creates the shield.  Perhaps he created the costume?  I guess we’ll find out soon enough, but man oh man are these Marvel movies ramping up the cool factor.
