You might be surprised to learn that Martin Scorsese’s next film opens in a month, and we’re just now seeing a trailer and poster for it. SILENCE is a passion project for the famed director which he’s been cultivating for the past 28 years or so. Paramount Pictures must have decided to push the release up so it could qualify for the awards voting next month, but based on the trailer below they may be doing the smart thing here. This looks nothing short of incredible. Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver star as two Jesuit priests who seek out their mentor (played by Liam Neeson) in Japan at a time when Christianity was forbidden there. It reminds me a bit of THE MISSION (1986), which featured a similar story with a different setting. Scorsese and Jay Cocks (GANGS OF NEW YORK) co-wrote the screenplay based on Shusaku Endo’s novel about Portuguese Jesuit missionary Cristóvão Ferreira (the Neeson character in this film). The supporting cast includes Tadanobu Asano, Ciarán Hinds and Yosuke Kubozuka. Watch the trailer and tell us your thoughts in the comments.
Martin Scorsese’s SILENCE tells the story of two Christian missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor (Liam Neeson) – at a time when Christianity was outlawed and their presence forbidden. The celebrated director’s 28-year journey to bring Shusaku Endo’s 1966 acclaimed novel to life will be in theaters this Christmas.
