DIGGING FOR FIRE is a rare gem, one of those films that feels very real and natural, and is the kind of movie you almost immediately relate to because of its improv style. Directed by Joe Swanberg, it stars Jake Johnson and Rosemarie Dewitt as a couple with child who find themselves separately going on little adventures. Jake’s character becomes obsessed with something he finds in the dirt behind a home they’re currently house sitting in, and Rosemarie finds herself spending an unexpected evening with a dashing young man that is nothing like her husband. At one point Jake’s character has a big party with lots of friends, even recruiting some of them to help with his dig. That’s where Steve Berg comes in, even commenting on how this little excavation may be too much for him. I had a chance to sit down with Jake Johnson and Steve Berg in Dallas to discuss the movie, and their thoughts on some of what we see in the film. The end result is a fun and candid interview. Just before I went in, they had been a little loud in the previous interview, resulting in the press waiting outside to wonder what was going on in there… so I challenged them to end this interview even louder. The finish (which you may want to turn down your speakers for) is priceless.
