Sometimes movies can get held up by the studio, and in rare cases held for several years before finally seeing release. To give you an idea of just how long this one has been waiting, we first posted pictures from SHANGHAI back in 2009, and posted a trailer in April of 2010, though even back then no definitive release date had been given. Since then it’s seen release in various foreign markets, but never in U.S. theaters. The Mikael Håfström (1408) CASABLANCA-esque film stars John Cusack, Gong Li, Ken Watanabe, and Chow Yun-Fat, and is said to be a ’40s period piece which revolves around an American expat who returns to Shanghai in the months before Pearl Harbor due to the death of his friend. David Morse and Jeffrey Dean Morgan also appear. The Weinstein Company will release the film on August 21, though we don’t expect it will be in many theaters… which is sad, as it looks rather impressive. It’s also worthy of note that the film is written by Hossein Amini, who wrote DRIVE, a hit film that came out after SHANGHAI was supposed to see U.S. release. Check out the new trailer below and let us know your thoughts.
