Occasionally a psychological thriller comes along that really evokes a strong and distinct response with audiences. After playing at the Venice Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, and New Directors/New Films, GOODNIGHT MOMMY is about to hit theaters this September thanks to the fine folks at Radius. Directed and written by Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz, the Austrian-produced German language film stars Susanne Wuest, Elias Schwarz and Lukas Schwarz. The story follows two twin boys who sense something is wrong when their mother returns home from intense cosmetic surgery. Bandaged and emotionally distant, she just doesn’t seem like the mom they remember. What follows is a series of mind games and horror, as you can see by the uncomfortable images in the rather brilliant trailer below. It’s been a while since I saw a movie trailer that really disturbed me… this is one for the books. Take a look and see if you don’t agree.

In the heat of the summer lays a lonesome house in the countryside where nine year old twin brothers await their mother’s return. When she comes home, bandaged after cosmetic surgery, nothing is like before and the children start to doubt whether this woman is actually who she says she is. What ensues is a terrifying struggle with fatal consequences on par with THE SHINING and DEAD RINGERS.

GOODNIGHT MOMMY opens September 11, 2015
