JURASSIC WORLD had highest global opening of all time, Chris Pratt signed for sequels

Never let it be said that dinosaurs are old news. While previous JURASSIC PARK sequels were successful at the box office, we’re not sure anyone could have predicted the overwhelming success of JURASSIC WORLD this past weekend. The newest installment in the popular Universal Pictures franchise earned the second highest domestic opening of all time with $204.8 million – just shy of Marvel’s THE AVENGERS (2012) which opened with $207.2 million. But the worldwide take is the more impressive aspect, as the film took in a whopping $511.8 million ($100 million in China alone), which is officially the highest worldwide opening take of all time, and the very first time a movie took in over $500 million in one weekend… wow. Japan will have to wait until August 5th to see the film, and we can only guess how much more it will bring in then. With that kind of success, it’s only natural the sequel (to a sequel) talk has already begun. Chris Pratt even posted on Facebook about the success of the film, saying the following:

On behalf of everyone involved in the making of #JurassicWorld, and believe me there are thousands of us, I want to say…

And in case you’re wondering whether or not Pratt has considered returning for a sequel, Entertainment Weekly asked that very question and got the answer we’d all expect. His response was “I am. They have me for I think 38 movies or something.” Pratt has openly expressed his sincere love for the franchise, and how excited he was to be a part of it, so we’re betting signing him on for more was a pretty easy thing for the studio to do. At this point the smartest thing he could do is ask for point on the gross of each film still to come.

It’s not surprising that Universal would think ahead and want to keep the money train going, especially considering Chris Pratt is easily one of the hottest names in Hollywood right now. With GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY being such a surprise hit for Marvel last year, and now JURASSIC WORLD being a colossal hit for Universal Pictures, he’s got a big cinematic two for two going (or three for three if you count THE LEGO MOVIE). GUARDIANS 2 is on the way in May of 2017, and Pratt is currently filming THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN reboot scheduled for a January 2017 release. Not bad for a guy who just two years ago was known as the slightly doughy goofball on PARKS AND RECREATION. The question now is where the events in JURASSIC WORLD will lead to next. For those who have seen the film (small spoiler alert), there is a scene in which Dr. Henry Wu (BD Wong) escapes in an InGen helicopter with dino embryos, perhaps even some more freaky hybrids like the Indominous Rex. Surely creating another park isn’t going to be an option, considering the chaos that erupts in JURASSIC WORLD, but perhaps a private (or even underground) research facility is a potential plot concept. Personally, I’d love seeing something like InGen setting up shop in the African desert, having the dinosaurs inevitably escape, and then watching prehistoric creatures battle with modern day desert predators, like lions and rhinos… can you imagine? Tell us where you’d like to see the next sequel go in the comments below.
