AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON is still smoking hot in theaters across the world, but Marvel isn’t sitting around wasting time. Production has begun on the third Cap film CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, which pits Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) against Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.)… yep, Iron Man is the bad guy! You can read the official Marvel press release below, which also contains the plot description, but the key points are this – this movie picks up where AGE OF ULTRON left off with Steve Rogers leading a new Avengers team, but when they cause damage during their heroics, the government decides the need to be held accountable for their actions. This divides the members, sides are taken, and heroes end up battling each other… which of course will lead to more collateral damage.

This story is based on the popular “Civil War” mini-series released by Marvel Comics a few years back, which also lead into the assassination of Captain America story. After the events in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, the establishment of Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) regaining his memories after decades of being The Winter Soldier, one has to wonder if the movies will ultimately follow the comics all the way through, seeing Steve Rogers killed and Bucky becoming the new Cap. We know a few things now about CIVIL WAR that also lend to this idea, as both Sebastian Stan and Emily VanCamp (who played Agent 13 in THE WINTER SOLDIER) are back. But they’re not the only familiar faces popping up in this installment. Paul Rudd will also be featured, hot off the heels of ANT-MAN, and it would make sense that he would join the Avengers in the film as Ant-Man was one of the original team members in the comics. But perhaps the most unusual cast addition is William Hurt, who played General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in THE INCREDIBLE HULK 2008 film. That character is sort of a mainstay in the Marvel comic book universe, but with no indication of Mark Ruffalo showing up as Hulk in this one, it’s a little odd General Ross would be part of the cast… then again the films established he has a relationship with Tony Stark in the post credits scene on THE INCREDIBLE HULK, so there’s that.

Outside of those names, you can also look for Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch and Paul Bettany as The Vision in this one – whew! That’s like an Avengers movie without the proper title! And Frank Grillo will return making his metamorphosis into Crossbones after barely surviving the events of THE WINTER SOLDIER. New characters to the block will include Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, Daniel Bruhl as Baron Helmut Zemo and Martin Freeman (who is playing a mystery character).

CIVIL WAR will be shot (with IMAX cameras) all over the world, including Stateside locations in Atlanta, Georgia and then exotic locales like Puerto Rick, Iceland and even Germany. This film is being directed by THE WINTER SOLDIER team of Anthony and Joe Russo who reunite with writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, and those guys will hop straight from this into THE AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Part I and II. Good gigs. Fans can look for CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR in theaters on May 6th, 2016. Are you excited? Tell us your thoughts in the comments.

The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.
