It seems in recent years Johnny Depp has almost becomes more of a comical performer than a serious actor, and let’s just say some of his choices have been questionable. But the new movie BLACK MASS may change that perception. Directed by Scott Cooper, who gave us CRAZY HEART and OUT OF THE FURNACE, this film has Depp playing notorious gangster Whitey Bulger… and he’s practically unrecognizable. The supporting cast is pretty incredible as well, featuring Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, Jesse Plemons, Corey Stoll, Rory Cochrane, Sienna Miller, Adam Scott and David Harbour. There’s so much to love in this trailer, which has shades of Martin Scorsese to it, but this may also be the film that really makes Cooper a household name. Take a look and see what you think, and tell us your thoughts in the comments.

In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.

BLACK MASS opens September 18, 2015
