New POLTERGEIST trailer & poster hits your fears right on the (clown) nose

It’s called coulrophobia. Simply put, it’s the fear of clowns. For me, I grew up blissfully indifferent to clowns of all stripes and shades… until Tobe Hooper decided to make, arguably, the scariest clown in cinematic history* in the 1982 blockbuster POLTERGEIST. There are a number of iconic scares in the movie – the mirror face-shred and the creepy “eating tree” (Shel Silverstein’s nemesis) come to mind – but that damned clown still haunts me.

I’ll admit that I was really skeptical of the “reboot” news of a film that sincerely shaped my fears. Why screw with a perfect horror film from the Eighties? If the advance trailers are any indication, director Gil Kenan knows what really worked well from Hooper’s original, and he’s amping it all up for 2015 audiences. And, yes, that includes the flippin’ clown. Watch the newly released trailer, and see for yourself.

And ya gotta love that poster above, which I also posted just for good measure, and is filling my brain with screeching as well.

Legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi (“Spiderman,” “Evil Dead”, “The Grudge”) and director Gil Kenan (“Monster House”) contemporize the classic tale about a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces. When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever.

POLTERGEIST, starring Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Saxon Sharbino, Kyle Catlett, Jared Harris, Kennedi Clements, and my new nightmare clown, hits theaters May 22, 2015.

* Which would stand until Tim Curry’s Pennywise in the TV movie of Stephen King’s IT… but that’s another remake story.
