File this under “Best news I’ve heard all day!” David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson have signed a deal to reprise their roles as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully for FOX in a six-episode limited series. Variety broke the news, saying FOX has given this an official order, and series creator Chris Carter will be in charge for 20th Century Fox TV and Ten Thirteen Productions. According to reports, the production is set to begin this summer. No word yet on when the limited series would run, but we’re guessing either around Christmas or perhaps early next year to kick off 2016. Carter was quoted to say “I think of it as a 13-year commercial break. The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”
This is not the first time FOX has revived a successful series, coming on the heels of the 13-episode 24: DIE ANOTHER DAY series which brought back Kiefer Sutherland and pals. THE X-FILES originally ran for nine seasons and spawned two theatrical films – THE X-FILES: FIGHT THE FUTURE and THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE. This is also believed to be done in interest to various streaming and video-on-demand platforms such as Amazon Prime. Fox Television Group chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden were big supporters of the shows in its original airing, and earlier in 2015 teased plans to revive it. With today’s news that added, “We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of ‘The X-Files’ — one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers — and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again.”
