NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: SECRET OF THE TOMB review by Julie Fisk – Ben Stiller is back for more of the same

New in theaters this week is Ben Stiller in NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: SECRET OF THE TOMB. This time the museum exhibits come to life and have to solve a serious problem. Oh wait, that’s what happened in the other movies too, right?

I wish I could say that this MUSEUM brings something totally new and exciting but… no, it doesn’t. It’s essentially the same movie, which doesn’t mean that it’s bad. Stiller is having a blast telling the same old jokes with his cohorts (like Owen Wilson and Steve Coogan) and the vibe is infectious, even if it’s supremely goofy.

In fact, the only person who doesn’t seem to be in on the fun is Robin Williams. He’s back to play Teddy Roosevelt but he seems almost… sad. I hate to say that and who knows, maybe I’m just projecting. There is one scene in particular between Williams and Stiller that had me bawling. It’s close to the end and you can see it coming, but bracing yourself won’t help.

The film is bolstered by the addition of Dan Stevens who plays Lancelot and HOLY CRAP, WHO IS THIS BEAUTIFUL MAN??? I’ve never seen this dude before but let’s take a minute to do a little Wiki-Stalking. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Stevens

Damn, another reason I should’ve been watching Downton Abbey.

Anyhow, let’s get back to trashing NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: SECRET OF THE TOMB. I took my kids to see this one and they were APPALLED that I didn’t love it. I told them that the movie was like an annoying toddler on a sugar rush and they both said, “But MOM, what about the monkey? What about the tiny cowboy and the caveman and the lady security guard? They were all hilarious!” (Oh yeah, Rebel Wilson plays a British security guard, and she’s always a good thing.)

I hate to say it but my daughters are right this time (don’t you ever tell them I said that). This movie IS packed with funny stuff. It’s just a little OVER-packed for my liking. That’s why I’m giving NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: SECRET OF THE TOMB a B-. It’s a happy medium between my lower score and my daughters’ sky-high score. Just make sure you take your kids to see it because they will love it, and that will make you like it more.
