Anna Faris could star in PRIVATE BENJAMIN remake

New Line is already scheduled to do remakes (and/or updates) of POLICE ACADEMY and NATIONAL LAMPOON’S VACATION, and now it appears another Warner Bros. title is on the slate for a re-imagining, as noted on THR.  Remember Goldie Hawn’s classic comedy PRIVATE BENJAMIN?  Hard to believe it came out 30 years ago.  That’s right, 1980.  Well the new remake is set to star the lovely Anna Faris, who when you think about it is pretty much the modern day equivalent to a young Goldie Hawn anyway.  Amy Talkington (NIGHT OF THE WHITE PANTS) is in talks about penning the script, which would be produced by Mark Gordon (producer of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, executive producer of GREY’S ANATOMY).

The original PRIVATE BENJAMIN made a big star out of Goldie Hawn, in which she portrayed a pampered woman that joins the Army after her husband dies during sex on their wedding night.  It also featured Eileen Brennan as the superior officer you love to hate – a role she continued on the PRIVATE BENJAMIN TV series.  The original film was one of the top-grossing movies of 1980.

THR states that the new version will be set the story in modern times with current wars as the backdrop.

Insiders say the studio doesn’t want to poke fun at the men and women in the service or take political potshots, but rather focus on the empowerment elements and build on the fish-out-of-water comedy.

I really like Anna Faris, and I think the more starring vehicles she gets, the better.  Let’s face it, we live in the age of remakes and sequels, now more than ever.  This actually sounds like something that could work to me.  We must also remember, it wasn’t long ago that rumors were circulating that Jessica Simpson was to start in a PRIVATE BENJAMIN remake.  As much as I’m attracted to Jessica, I think Anna Faris is a much smarter choice for this project.  Agree or disagree?  Tell us in the comments!
