There’s a handful of directors working today that I consider truly great at what they do. Among the recent names to work in the industry, Bennett Miller is absolutely at the top of that list. His films aren’t flashy or exciting, just phenomenal character studies with impressive and unexpected performances. He manages to take actors known for a certain type of work, and mold them into something new and unanticipated. He made a star out of Philip Seymour Hoffman with CAPOTE, transformed Jonah Hill in MONEYBALL, and is now showing us dark sides to both Channing Tatum and Steve Carell in FOXCATCHER. Miller excels in taking real life material and capturing it on film in an engaging yet sincere way. His latest film is no exception, and it already being called a surefire awards contender. But it hasn’t been an easy journey. Bennett worked on FOXCATCHER for eight long years, and met with a lot of opposition before winding up where he is with it now. The end result is bleak and haunting, but so very fantastic. I had the honor of sitting down with Miller for a short interview, and you can watch that below. I was happy to see that he was as humble as he is brilliant, and an absolute pleasure to talk to. Check out FOXCATCHER now playing just about everywhere.
