We’ve actually avoided posting the ridiculous back and forth rumors about a third GHOSTBUSTERS film, as it got so silly after a while. Dan Aykroyd was trying to give fans hope against hope, but with Bill Murray saying he wouldn’t participate, and the tragic and unexpected death of Harold Ramis, it seemed as if there was no chance a true sequel would ever really happen. There’s been recent chatter about BRIDESMAIDS and THE HEAT director Paul Feig eyeing the potential third outing, and even the rumor it may have an all-female cast. Wednesday those rumors became something more. Feig posted on his official Twitter that he is in fact doing a new GHOSTBUSTERS movie, and it would feature a female cast. He also noted he’s working on it with Kate Dippold, who previously wrote THE HEAT for Feig. Here’s the now-famous Tweet:
It's official. I'm making a new Ghostbusters & writing it with @katiedippold & yes, it will star hilarious women. That's who I'm gonna call.

This news has met with a lot of animosity among hardcore fans of the franchise, and even accusations of Hollywood feminizing films – yes, people are saying that. I’m one of the most die hard GHOSTBUSTERS fans you’re likely to meet, and I choose to look at it a different way. Sure, they could cast several dudes and have a passing of the torch attempt, but that also has the potential to be awful. Female comedies are kind of the hot thing right now, and Feig has proven himself to be a very successful director with them. Couple that with the fact that this hasn’t been labeled a “sequel” yet, it could just be a reboot, and maybe mixing things up with a female team could allow for a lot of new potential. When the concept of the team being women first hit, Bill Murray actually named some actresses he thought would be great, including Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Linda Cardellini and Emma Stone – Murray has worked with Stone (in ZOMBIELAND) and McCarthy (in ST. VINCENT). In some ways I can see this working pretty well, especially if they play up the concept of three or four women trying to start this supernatural business, and facing adversity in many ways, perhaps even going up against male competitors. There’s definitely potential there. Though I am sad to see Aykroyd and Ivan Reitman removed from the equation. Hopefully they’ll at least find a way to include Aykroyd and maybe Ernie Hudson is some capacity. If it is a sequel, they could be the ones training the girls. So what do you think? Are you ready for a female GHOSTBUSTERS III… or reboot? Who would be your casting choices? Tell us in the comments below.
