Jeremy Renner had a big year in 2012 starring in both THE AVENGERS and THE BOURNE LEGACY, but outside of a co-starring role in last year’s AMERICAN HUSTLE has been a little out of the moviegoing scene. The new movie KILL THE MESSENGER has him back in a leading role, in a story based on true events of cocaine smuggling in the 1980s. It’s directed by Michael Cuesta (HOMELAND) and written by Peter Landesman (PARKLAND), based on books by both Gary Webb and Nick Schou. And get a load of this cast! Outside of Renner, the film also stars Rosemarie DeWitt, Ray Liotta, Tim Blake Nelson, Barry Pepper, Oliver Platt, Michael Sheen, Paz Vega, Michael Kenneth Williams, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Andy Garcia. I love films about the 80s, or any period piece for the matter, and anything involving the drug trade from the era almost always makes for good cinema. A reporter becomes the target of a vicious smear campaign that drives him to the point of suicide after he exposes the CIA’s role in arming Contra rebels in Nicaragua and importing cocaine into California. Based on the true story of journalist Gary Webb.
