It’s actually a little surprising no one has made a Jimi Hendrix biopic yet, but from the looks of the new trailer for JIMI: ALL IS BY MY SIDE the wait may end up being worth it. André Benjamin (aka André 3000 of Outkast) appears to be channeling the legendary rock musician for John Ridely’s directorial debut. Ridley is hot off his Best Screenplay Oscar win for 12 YEARS A SLAVE, and he also wrote this new project, which focuses on a year in Hendrix’s life where he started to become famous. There won’t be any classic Jimi tunes in the movie, but rather music he developed early in his career. It co-stars Hayley Atwell, Imogen Poots, and Burn Gorman. Check out the first trailer and tell us your thoughts in the comments.

OutKast’s André Benjamin stars as Jimi Hendrix in this revealing biopic from Academy Award-winning writer-director John Ridley (12 Years A Slave). Covering a year in Hendrix’s life from 1966-67 as an unknown backup guitarist playing New York’s Cheetah Club to making his mark in London’s music scene up until his Monterey Pop triumph, the film presents an intimate portrait of the sensitive young musician on the verge of becoming a rock legend.
