We’ve seen a few images from Zack Snyder’s BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, but we’ve yet to get a solid look at MAN OF STEEL‘s Henry Cavill back in the Superman costume. Now that changes, as Warner Brothers has officially released an image that shows the “Man of Steel” on a rather gothic-looking rooftop… fitting for the fact this movie is going to be so Batman-heavy. Check it out above, in hi-res no less – just click on it to see it in high resolution. This comes on the heels of a Tweeted photo of Cavill in his Clark Kent outfit, which was posted by the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund, a charity Henry supports that helps families of serving and retired Royal Marines. In case you missed it:
I imagine this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to promotional images from the film, and it’s nothing drastically different than what we saw in MAN OF STEEL, but still, it’s an official studio image of Superman… and that’s pretty cool in and of itself. Zack Snyder also talked to USA Today (where the new photo premiered) about the film’s plot and overall universe.
By bringing in more DC Comics do-gooders such as Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher), the new movie is thicker, denser and more epic than Man of Steel, according to Snyder. And it’s also the next step toward building a strong movie universe that ultimately leads to Snyder’s Justice League, the supergroup answer to Marvel’s The Avengers, tentatively scheduled for a 2018 release.
Man of Steel was all about Superman finding his place in the world as both a hero and as a man, ultimately saving the city of Metropolis from certain doom. Dawn of Justice continues to immerse him on Earth by working at the Daily Planet as Clark Kent along with Lois Lane (Amy Adams) and Perry White (Laurence Fishburne). But it also takes him to new environments such as Gotham City and introduces larger threats, including Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg).
Snyder also talked about adding Batman to the mix:
It ultimately made sense with Dawn of Justice to add Bruce Wayne and his cowled alter ego to the mix. Because of Christopher Nolan’s recent Dark Knight trilogy, “I was in no rush to put Batman in the movie,” Snyder says, “but on the other hand it seemed organic the way our story was unfolding to start to feather him in.” Instead of using several movies to define Affleck’s Batman, Snyder felt the character’s 75-year mythology is so deep in culture now that they can just jump to an older, road-weary take on the Dark Knight. Plus, he says, “it’s cooler to see a crusty old Batman beating the snot out of guys.”
And finally Zack talked about the film’s title, which has met with criticism from fans:
The director can’t say exactly how the relationship between the two superheroes evolves, “but suffice it to say there is a ‘v’ in between their names” in the movie title, Snyder says. He explains that having the “v” instead of “vs.” is a way “to keep it from being a straight ‘versus’ movie, even in the most subtle way.”
So far Snyder has only shot limited scenes with Cavill and Affleck, and supposedly nothing yet with Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. We’d imagine the next “official” image might actually be Gadot, but at this point it’s hard to tell. Are you excited about BATMAN V SUPERMAN? Tell us in the comments.
