It is being reported that Chris Evans, who played Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) in the two FANTASTIC FOUR movies, has been offered the coveted role of Captain America. HeatVisionBlog broke the story that Evans is apparently the odds on favorite with the powers that be, though neither Marvel nor CAA (his representative) had any comment on the matter. The biggest problem right now is that Evans is already committed to starring in the Anna Faris romantic comedy WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER? and would have to find a way to break away from it before the role could be his. If he takes the part of Cap (and his alter-ego Steve Rogers), it could mean starring in three CAPTAIN AMERICA movies, THE AVENGERS movies, and appearances in several other Marvel films. Oddly enough, Evans wasn’t in the original lineup of potential actors being considered for the role, but rather came in late in the game. At one point it looked like John Krasinski (THE OFFICE) was getting close to winning the role, which met with considerable negative reactions from the comic fan community. Garrett Hedlund (TRON LEGACY) was also a potential name Marvel liked.
I like Chris Evans as an actor, and he has a certain on-screen charm that is undeniable, not to mention the right physique for this sort of character. But considering his pre-existing Marvel character connection with the FF films, and his numerous other comic book films either already out or coming out, including TMNT, THE LOSERS and SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD – is there too much of a comic connection already? It’s also somewhat interesting to think that the man who played the Modern Age Human Torch could now be starring in a movie with someone else playing the Golden Age Human Torch (since The Invaders are said to have a big part in the film). It’s also rumored that Alice Eve (SHE’S OUT OF MY LEAGUE) and Emily Blunt (THE WOLFMAN) are up for the role of Peggy Carter, and Keira Knightley (PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films) could be playing Betsy Ross. Hugo Weaving is supposedly set to play Cap’s nemesis The Red Skull. About the only thing that still seems to be dead solid is director Joe Johnston being attached, and the film is said to be shot in the UK
