This year at the Dallas International Film Festival, one of the special guests was actor Clark Gregg, who these days is known for Marvel’s AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC. Gregg has been playing Agent Phil Coulson for the past seven years, appearing in various Marvel movies like IRON MAN and THOR, dying dramatically in THE AVENGERS, and returning to life and headlining the current fan-favorite TV series… but some might not realize he’s also an accomplished director. In 2008 he released CHOKE, based on the book by FIGHT CLUB author Chuck Palahniuk, and starring Sam Rockwell. The subject matter was a little taboo, but the film was a solid directorial debut for Gregg, and begged the question of when he’d once again get behind the camera. Now, seven years later, he’s finished TRUST ME, an unapologetic dramedy that shows the ugly side of Hollywood studios and agents. It’s not a movie I’d imagine any studio would want to release, as it doesn’t portray the system in a flattering way at all, but it is a bold and daring film that once again proves Clark can do great things. He also stars as the lead in this one, playing a struggling former child star who is now a Hollywood agent to young stars, though also re-teams with Sam Rockwell who plays a competing agent. Gregg also introduces audiences to an amazing leading lady in Dallas-born Saxon Sharbino, who plays an aspiring young actress that the studios want to exploit. For the past year or so, I’ve been doing official interviews for DIFF during the festival, and this was one I didn’t want to miss – I guess you could call it a “shared” exclusive. My thanks to Andrew Conway for shooting and editing this, and the great Clark Gregg for taking the time to do it. We’re not sure yet what the future holds for TRUST ME, but we’ll keep you updated. It’s definitely worth watching, and I truly hope it gets seen. In the meantime check out our half-hour interview below.
