Hugo Weaving may play “The Red Skull” in THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA!

We may not yet have our Steve Rogers, but it appears we’ve got his comic book nemesis.  The Red Skull, who will be the main villain in THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA, will be played by none other than THE MATRIX baddie Hugo Weaving… at least maybe he’ll play it.

HeatVision Blog is reporting that Marvel Studios is currently in talks with the actor to play Captain America’s nemesis in the film, which would reunite the talented actor with director Joe Johnston – they previously worked together on THE WOLFMAN.

The dealmaking with Weaving is in a delicate stage that will play out in the next day or so. Agencies grouse that Marvel plays hardball in the negotiating process and also demands multi-movie commitments, though the latter usually applies to actors playing its heroes.

I think this could be great casting, as Weaving has the chops to play bad guys (as we’ve already seen), and has the gravitas to help sell the serious side of this film.  Now they just need to find the right actor to play Cap, and we’re all set.  Hopefully this pans out.  We’ll keep you posted in the coming days.

Within the comic book storyline from Marvel comics, The Red Skull has been Captain America’s archenemy since 1941, when he engaged in espionage and sabotage as Hitler’s right-hand man. In his final battle with the superhero, he was buried under the rubble of a bombed building, but (as would occur later with Captain America) fell into a state of suspended animation. Both were revived in modern times.  Will this be the storyline of the movie?  We’ll see.
