(L to R) Mike Vogel - Garrett Hedlund - Chris Evans

There were rumors floating around the net earlier today that it was looking like John Krasinski (THE OFFICE) was going to nab the role of Captain America in director Joe Johnston’s THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA movie.  The word was Krasinski had done four separate readings for producers, and two costume tests.  You may recall us telling you about the initial potential choices for Cap, which is HERE – at that time, the considered names included Scott Porter (FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS), Mike Vogel (CLOVERFIELD), John Krasinski, Michael Cassidy (SMALLVILLE), Patrick Flueger (THE 4400), and Wilson Bethel (GENERATION KILL).  I held off on the Krasinski report today, mainly because I had heard from several sources that the rumors were questionable… and now I’m glad I waited.  It looks like THE OFFICE star may not be Marvel’s choice after all.

Deadline New York is reporting that Marvel Studios and director Joe Johnston are no longer going with any of the original choices, with the one exception of Mike Vogel, who is still being considered.  And now there are two more names being considered – TRON LEGACY‘s Garrett Hedlund and FANTASTIC FOUR star Chris Evans.  Hedlund was reportedly always on Marvel’s wish list, though didn’t test with the other actors mentioned previously, for the reported reason of “scheduling”.  Deadline’s Mike Fleming claims to have also heard his reps balked when Marvel informed them that the job would include options for nine future films, and a salary of only around $300,000.  The film is scheduled for release from Paramount Pictures on July 22, 2011.

Well comic book fans are probably breathing a collective sigh of relief now, since the rumors of John Krasinski were NOT sitting well with most Cap fans.  I said it before, and I stand by it – I like Krasinski, and I’m not saying he couldn’t pull off the role… but, I do think casting him as Steve Rogers would be a clear cut case of “stunt” casting and not picking the right star.  I was really hoping my buddy Scott Porter would be given a shot, especially since he is one of the most passionate comic book fans I know, outside of being a great actor.  But I never could get on board with Mike Vogel.  I saw him not long ago in SHE’S OUT OF MY LEAGUE, and his performance is so forgettable it’s not even funny.  Plus Vogel is a short guy with a small build.  Cap needs to be big.  I like Chris Evans, but he’s already played a memorable Marvel hero (Johnny Storm in FANTASTIC FOUR and FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER), and I’m not sure I can see him as Cap.  Now Garrett Hedlund is someone I could almost get on board with.  I’ve interviewed Hedlund before, and he’s got a lot of qualities that scream Captain America.  Outside of the rugged good looks, he’s very fit, and fairly tall as I remember.  If he added some bulk, he could pull it off.  Plus Hedlund has really great range as an actor.  Audiences really won’t know his name well until TRON LEGACY hits, but he could very well be a solid choice.  To me, the biggest question is this – are ANY of these actors going to be able to pull off being a leader of The Avengers team, with actors like Robert Downey Jr. around them?  What do you think?  Tell us in the comments below.
