Robert De Niro is ready for another MIDNIGHT RUN

MIDNIGHT RUN has always been one of my favorite Robert De Niro movies.  His hilarious banter back and forth with the beaten down Charles Grodin is one of the true joys of 1980’s cinema.  Well though there’s been rumors through the years of a possible sequel, it looks like now it may FINALLY happen.  TheHollywoodReporter got a big scoop that Universal and Robert De Niro are gearing up for a second outing.  It’s said screenwriter Timothy Dowling (ROLE MODELS) is penning a sequel script, though this time De Niro’s character of Jack Walsh would be paired with a younger comedic punk.  That part bothers me a bit.  After all, the wordplay between De Niro and Charles Grodin is what made that first film so great.  No Grodin?  Why not?  And who amongst younger comedians could come close to matching Grodin’s wit?  The original 1988 film wasn’t a huge financial success, but was well-reviewed by film critics, and has become quite a classic on cable TV and home video.  Robert De Niro will produce with Tribeca Films partner Jane Rosenthal.  Timothy Dowling also worked on SHE’S OUT OF MY LEAGUE and the Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz action-comedy KNIGHT AND DAY.  Nerds worldwide may know Dowling best for writing the famous short GEORGE LUCAS IN LOVE, which helped him get his foot in the door of Hollywood.
