TRON LEGACY will have five IMAX formatted scenes… giant IMAX 3-D greatness!

You may have heard about Disney’s TRON LEGACY events that took place over the weekend in New York, Los Angeles, London, Toronto and Sydney.  Reactions from those who attended were mixed, since it was a lot of hoopla for essentially what turned into a week-early viewing of the theatrical trailer… which they only played once.  One particularly juicy piece of news that came out of this was reported by Alex Billington of FirstShowing and Peter Sciretta of SlashFilm.  Seems the Los Angeles event was also attended by director Joseph Kosinki and writer/producer Steven Lisberger.  Alex and Peter spoke with Kosinski and found out some news about the presentation of the upcoming film.  Apparently TRON LEGACY will feature five action sequences that will be shown in 1.7:1 aspect ratio exclusively in IMAX movie theaters.  That means it will the entire screen, at least during those scenes.  This has been done before, and very effectively with Christopher Nolan’s THE DARK KNIGHT.  The majority of TRON LEGACY will be shown in widescreen 2.35:1 aspect ratio, leaving a black bar on the top and bottom of the IMAX screen.  Typically, even the biggest of IMAX movies do this.  However with these special action scenes, and the added element of 3-D, one can only imagine how cool the TRON LEGACY experience will be.  Supposedly Disney will also release a special trailer showing the differences so viewers know what to expect.  I’ll be there December 17, 2010… will you?
